“People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life. A true soul mate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. A soul mates purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, make you so out of control that you have to transform your life…”
— -Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat. Pray. Love.
It’s amazing the misconception about “soulmates.” The usual suspects include boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband. Soulmates are thought to be people you spend your life with, people lucky enough to have found “the one.” And sometimes they are. But for those of you who believe that those people are the only “soulmates” you have, I beg to differ.
I believe my “one” is actually more like “six” and my soulmates also go by regular names like Cat and Queenie and Tamara and Abi and Michelle. My soulmates go by the names of Mom and Dad. My soulmates hand me my ass, tell me to go fuck myself, then crack a joke so funny that I cry at work. They remind me to stay humble because they’re the FIRST ones to tell me when I’m feelin’ myself a lil too much. They keep me in check, push me to be better, do better, and want more.
Hey, Soul Sister… THANK YOU for being chicken soup for my soul. Just wanted to put that out there.
Anddddddddd, I just saw that Abi blogged the same thing this morning. We’re sooooo friends. Actually, we’re soulmates. =)
