Hi, My name is Rachel.

Hi, my name is Rachel Tan.

My driver’s license still says Rachel Tan Brito, but as of today my Facebook says Rachel Tan.

I know it sounds petty as fuck, but this is kind of like a big deal. It’s only Facebook, right? RIGHT. But it’s not just Facebook. It’s me owning who I am without being affiliated. It’s me saying to the world that I am my own woman and I do not belong to anybody else. It’s me letting go of the last 10 years of my life. It’s me setting myself free.

See, it’s not just a name and it’s not just Facebook. This is me shaking the weight. This is my independence.

And although I haven’t lost any weight as of late, I feel a thousand times lighter. I feel like the old me. Scratch that, I feel like a new me. Hi. My name is Rachel Tan. It’s nice to meet you.
